2008 Team
On October 10th 58 people from Priest Lake Presbyterian, Pond Presbyterian and Columbia Presbyterian arrived in Harlan, KY to setup for the 2008 Project JOY Appalachian Mission trip. This was the 10th year for Project JOY to go to the economically depressed coal mining area of Harlan County. This was the culmination of several weeks work collecting clothing, buying food, and assembling learning bags. The afternoon saw organized chaos as all the material were set up in the Harlan National Guard Armory ready for distribution on Saturday morning
Hands
The morning of Saturday October 11th saw a foggy, cool morning in Harlan. When we arrived at 7:30 a.m. there was already a large crowd waiting to get in. We heard the first people arrived at 1 a.m. to make sure they were first. We were joined by members of the Harlan Presbyterian Church and were ready for business at 8 a.m. Thee doors opened and the first people came through the doors. There was a steady stream of people all morning and we served over 300 families. The Lord did not only bless the people of Harlan with help but blessed those who gave their time and efforts as we saw so many needy people who were so appreciative of the help they received. All were able to get clothing, shoes and coats that they needed and they also received appropriately aged Learning Bags with school supplies and a food box. Pond Presbyterian also did the usual magnificent job of supplying blankets, pillows and linens.
